Two Directs, Two Days, One Very Good Week

Nintendo confirmed on September 4, 2026 that it is running two full Nintendo Direct presentations next week — and if that sounds like a lot, it is, because the company has never done it before. A Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct lands on September 8, a general Nintendo Direct follows on September 9, and a Treehouse: Live stream chases the second one. Clear your calendar, or at least your lunch break.

What the Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct Might Cover

Nintendo's own framing is deliberately open — the presentation will share information about how it plans to commemorate the series' 40th anniversary — and 30 minutes is a lot of runway for a single franchise.

The reasonable expectations are anniversary-shaped rather than blockbuster-shaped: collections, ports, merchandise, and the sort of archival material Nintendo has become notably more willing to open up in recent years. The company already has form here. We covered the full Switch 2 remake of Ocarina of Time back in June, and an anniversary show is exactly where a release window for something like that gets nailed down.

Thirty minutes is also long enough for a genuine surprise, and Zelda anniversaries have historically been where Nintendo lets its preservation instincts loose. If you have been hoping older entries in the series turn up somewhere playable on modern hardware, this is the show to watch.

The September 9 Direct Is About This Winter

The general Direct on September 9 has a stated scope: Nintendo Switch 2 software releasing this winter. That is a tighter remit than the usual grab-bag, and a tighter remit usually means firmer information — dates, not teasers.

The 110-minute Treehouse: Live that follows is the part seasoned Direct-watchers should circle. Treehouse segments are where Nintendo staff play the games at length with the developers talking over the top, and they consistently reveal more about how something actually feels than a two-minute sizzle reel ever does. Nearly two hours of it is a substantial commitment of stage time.

For context on how these shows have been landing lately, June's Direct stacked the Switch 2 lineup with genuinely heavy hitters. Winter is traditionally where Nintendo puts its biggest first-party swings.

How to Watch Both Nintendo Directs

Both presentations start at 7am Pacific on their respective days. You can watch on Nintendo's official site, on the Nintendo Treehouse: Live event page for the gameplay stream, and through the Nintendo Today! smart-device app, which needs a Nintendo Account and is not available in every region.

If you can only catch one, the September 9 Direct plus Treehouse is where concrete release information will live. If you have any affection at all for the series that gave us the top-down dungeon crawl, the September 8 show is the one you will be quoting for the rest of the month.

Why Two Directs Is Actually Interesting

Nintendo splitting anniversary content off into its own presentation rather than folding it into the main show is a small structural decision with a clear read: there is enough Zelda material that squeezing it into a 45-minute general Direct would have cost the winter lineup its airtime. Companies do not build a separate stage for a segment they intend to keep short.
