Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck's InterPositive for Up to $600 Million — The Biggest AI Filmmaking Deal Yet

Hollywood Meets AI Infrastructure

Netflix has acquired InterPositive, Ben Affleck's AI-powered filmmaking startup, in a deal worth up to $600 million including performance targets. The acquisition, which emerged from stealth via Bloomberg and TechCrunch reports on March 11, represents one of the largest AI acquisitions in entertainment history and signals Netflix's intent to build proprietary AI tools for content production.

InterPositive was founded by Affleck in 2022 and operated almost entirely under the radar until now. The 16-person team — all of whom will join Netflix — built AI tools that help filmmakers work more efficiently during post-production. The system creates AI models from a production's existing footage, then lets directors and editors use those models for tasks like color grading, relighting shots, fixing continuity issues, and adding visual effects.

What InterPositive Actually Does

The key distinction is that InterPositive doesn't generate new content — it works with footage that already exists. The AI models are trained on a specific production's dailies, meaning they understand the visual language, lighting conditions, and aesthetic of that particular project. This allows post-production teams to make changes that would traditionally require expensive reshoots or time-consuming manual VFX work.

For Netflix, which produces hundreds of original films and series per year, the efficiency gains compound quickly. If InterPositive's tools can reduce post-production timelines by even 10-15%, the savings across Netflix's entire content pipeline would be substantial — potentially justifying the acquisition price within a few years.

Affleck's New Role and the Bigger Picture

Affleck will serve as a senior adviser to Netflix, helping guide how the technology integrates into the company's production workflows. His involvement brings credibility with the creative community — a critical factor for any AI tool in Hollywood, where concerns about AI replacing human artists remain intense.

Netflix has been methodically building its technology infrastructure for years, from its recommendation algorithms to its production management tools. InterPositive fits into a broader strategy of using AI to make content creation faster and more cost-effective without compromising creative quality. For Netflix, this isn't about replacing filmmakers — it's about giving them better tools.
