Machinarium 2 Announced: Two Robots, No Text, Hand-Drawn
Machinarium 2 is official: Amanita Design's sequel to the 2009 puzzle classic lets you control two robots, with hand-drawn art and no text, on Steam.
Machinarium 2 is real. Amanita Design announced the sequel on October 8, 2026, bringing back one of the most beloved point-and-click adventures ever made, some 17 years after the original charmed players in 2009. The little robot Josef returns, he has company this time, and the whole thing is once again drawn by hand.
- Developer: Amanita Design, the Czech studio behind the original.
- Platform: PC via Steam, with no release date announced yet.
- New mechanic: control two robots, Josef and Berta, and switch between them at any time.
- Storytelling: no written text at all, just thought bubbles, symbols and gestures.
What Is Machinarium 2 About?
According to the announcement details reported by Gematsu, the story picks up after Josef and Berta escape the city of Machinarium. They crash-land in the barrens and stumble onto a hidden valley, home to two robot tribes. One lives in a monastery up on the rocks and the other in a city below, and both are running low on power.
It is a lovely setup for a puzzle adventure: two communities, one shared problem, and a pair of small heroes who have to figure out how everything connects. If the first game was about one robot finding his way back into a city, this one sounds like two robots helping a whole valley.
How Does the Two-Robot Gameplay Work?
This is the big change. You control both robots and can swap between them whenever you like. Each has abilities the other lacks, so puzzles are built around cooperation, with solutions that neither could manage alone.
Controls have had a rethink too. Per Gematsu, a gamepad moves the robots directly with no cursor on screen, while mouse control is still fully supported for point-and-click purists. That is a thoughtful nod to how many people now play on handheld PCs and from the sofa.
Will It Still Look and Sound Like Machinarium?
Yes, and then some. The art is entirely hand-drawn, with the studio citing old master drawings and Renaissance landscape painting as inspiration. Anyone who remembers the rusty, sketchy beauty of the original will know that a hand-drawn world is the heart of this series.
The music is in familiar hands as well. Composer Tomas Dvorak, also known as Floex, returns, and the score adds symphonic arrangements this time around.
And the series' signature rule stays in place. As the Steam page puts it: "Not a single line of text to read!" Everything is communicated through pictures and animation, which also means the game travels across languages without needing translation.
When Is the Machinarium 2 Release Date?
There is no date yet, and PC through Steam is the only platform confirmed so far. The Steam page is live, so wishlisting is the way to hear the moment something changes.
The announcement lands in a strong stretch for hand-crafted indie adventures. Events like Steam Next Fest keep proving there is a huge audience for smaller, artful games, and studios are responding with more ambitious ideas, as we saw when Double Fine let fans pick its next prototype.
A wordless, hand-drawn robot adventure with co-starring heroes is exactly the kind of game worth waiting for. We will share a release date as soon as Amanita names one, right here in our gaming coverage.
