JPM Coin on Ethereum: What the Deposit Token Move Means

JPM Coin, JPMorgan's USD deposit token, is now live on Ethereum mainnet beside Base, giving institutions 24/7 settlement on a $50B DeFi network.

The largest US bank just put its digital dollars on the most liquid smart-contract network in crypto. JPMorgan said JPM Coin, its token representing US dollar deposits at the bank, was deployed on Ethereum mainnet on Monday, October 19, and is available for institutional clients to use. The token has run on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network built by Coinbase, for close to a year. Adding Ethereum's main chain gives JPMorgan's clients what the bank calls multi-chain optionality for moving wholesale money between traditional finance and web3.

  • Live date: deployed on Ethereum mainnet October 19, 2026, joining the existing Base deployment
  • What it is: a USD deposit token backed by deposits at JPMorgan, carrying the risk profile of commercial bank money rather than a stablecoin's reserve model
  • Who can use it: only vetted, approved institutional counterparties, with transfers 24/7/365
  • Scale context: JPMorgan's Kinexys network handles more than $7 billion a day, and roughly $50 billion in crypto assets sits in Ethereum applications, per DeFiLlama

What Is JPM Coin?

JPM Coin is a deposit token issued through Kinexys, JPMorgan's blockchain unit. Clients deposit USD into a Blockchain Deposit Account and convert it into the token, then use it to send payments, post collateral and settle transactions on public blockchains in near real time. Because payment and settlement happen in one on-chain step, reconciliation is effectively automatic. Clients can redeem tokens back to dollars at any time, with no lock-up period, according to JPMorgan's product page.

The key distinction is that JPM Coin is bank money on a blockchain. It sits inside existing deposit regulation and JPMorgan's balance sheet, which is exactly why large institutions are comfortable using it. Why Did JPMorgan Choose Ethereum?

Emma Landriault, head of Kinexys Labs, told Bloomberg the bank picked Ethereum because it offers more liquidity than rival networks and is already used by institutional clients, according to CoinDesk's report. The audience is two groups: crypto firms that want to make blockchain payments, and financial firms that need a digital cash leg to settle trades or back tokenized assets.

"Issuing JPM Coin first on Base and now on Ethereum is a meaningful step towards providing our institutional clients with multi-chain optionality for moving wholesale money across both the web3 and traditional finance ecosystems," Landriault said in a statement.

JPMorgan also flagged plans in January to bring the token to the Canton Network, so Ethereum is one stop on a broader multi-chain path rather than the last.

What Does This Mean for Tokenized Finance?

Tokenization of real-world assets has a well-known missing piece: a trusted cash leg that lives on the same rails as the assets. Bonds, funds and treasuries can be tokenized, but settling them still often routes back through legacy payment systems. A bank-issued deposit token on Ethereum mainnet lets both sides of a trade move on chain at the same time.

It also fits a broader industry shift. JPMorgan, Citi, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, along with more than a dozen other US banks, have plans for a shared tokenized deposit network, echoing efforts like Canada's big six banks. Abroad, JPMorgan is among more than 30 banks helping Swift define its blockchain-based ledger.

One measured note: the Ethereum deployment is brand new, so this is a launch, not yet a measure of volume. The milestone to watch is how quickly institutional flows follow.

The Bottom Line

A token backed by the world's largest bank now runs natively on Ethereum's main chain, around the clock, with instant settlement. That is a meaningful vote of confidence in public blockchain infrastructure for wholesale finance. Follow the rest of the institutional story in our crypto coverage.
