Hugging Face Reachy Mini: Open-Source AI Robotics Finally Hits the Desktop

The Raspberry Pi ecosystem has powered thousands of creative computing projects — but until now, a fully capable open-source AI robot required either a research lab budget or serious hardware engineering skills. Hugging Face changed that calculus in a meaningful way with Reachy Mini, a desktop robot that puts genuine conversational AI, computer vision, and physical interaction on your desk for as little as $299. In its wireless configuration, it runs on the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4.

As of March 24, 2026, the wireless version has transitioned from Raspberry Pi 5 to the more integration-friendly CM4, and global availability has expanded through AliExpress, opening access for the international maker and developer community.

Two Models Built for Different Workflows

**Reachy Mini Lite ($299)** connects to an external Mac, Linux, or Windows computer via the Python SDK. This configuration is ideal for developers who want to experiment with AI integration and physical robot interaction without wireless complexity — the robot becomes an output device for AI systems running on your development machine.

**Reachy Mini Wireless ($449)** is the more capable standalone platform. Powered by the Raspberry Pi CM4, it operates with WiFi, Bluetooth, an accelerometer, and an integrated battery pack. This version is designed for mobile demonstrations, real-world interaction scenarios, and any project where tethering to a desk is impractical.

Hardware Built for AI Interaction

Both models share the same core sensor platform: a 6-degree-of-freedom head with pan, tilt, and roll motion, full body rotation, animated antennas, a forward-facing camera, four microphones, and a 5-watt speaker — all driven by nine servo motors.

The sensor suite is specifically designed for the interaction loops modern AI systems require: seeing, hearing, and responding to a person in real time. The built-in hand tracking sample application demonstrates this well — point at the robot, and Reachy Mini's camera and servo system track the gesture fluidly. Combine that with the microphone array and LLM integrations available through the SDK, and you have a capable testbed for multimodal AI in physical space.

A Developer Platform First

Hugging Face has positioned Reachy Mini explicitly as a developer platform. The Python SDK includes official JavaScript bindings and web application support, lowering the barrier for frontend developers to experiment with physical AI. The MuJoCo physics simulator integration means developers can test behaviors virtually before deploying them to the physical robot — an important workflow for iterative AI development.

At $299, Reachy Mini is accessible to individual developers, university labs, and maker spaces that have previously watched expensive commercial robot platforms from a distance. For an open-source robotics ecosystem that is increasingly central to how AI researchers prototype physical AI applications, that price point is genuinely significant.
