HSBC RedCoin Stablecoin: What 3.3M PayMe Users Can Do Now

A major global bank has put a stablecoin into an everyday payments app. HSBC launched HSBC RedCoin, its first stablecoin, on PayMe by HSBC on October 23, 2026. RedCoin is a Hong Kong dollar token licensed and regulated by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), and HSBC says more than 3.3 million PayMe users will be able to activate a stablecoin wallet in the app over the coming days. It is one of the clearest examples yet of bank-issued digital money reaching ordinary consumers at scale.

  • Token: HSBC RedCoin, ticker RCHKD, denominated in Hong Kong dollars
  • Reach: more than 3.3 million PayMe users, with merchant payments at over 100,000 merchants
  • Regulation: issued under an HKMA stablecoin issuer licence (FRS02) granted in April 2026
  • Next: a wallet in the HSBC HK Mobile Banking App and tokenized fund subscriptions later this year

What Can You Do With HSBC RedCoin?

At launch, RedCoin covers the two payments people use most. Peer-to-peer transfers let users send stablecoins instantly to friends and family through PayMe, and peer-to-merchant payments let them pay directly at more than 100,000 merchants. Because it lives inside an app millions already use, there is no separate wallet or exchange account to set up.

That design choice reflects HSBC's own research. A June 2026 survey of 1,060 HSBC customers found that easy access through existing apps, plus faster payments and settlement, are among the strongest drivers of stablecoin adoption. In the same survey, 53% of respondents said HKD stablecoins could strengthen Hong Kong's economic competitiveness through round-the-clock payments for trade, tourism and cross-border commerce.

How Is RedCoin Backed and Regulated?

RedCoin is issued by The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation under Hong Kong's Stablecoins Ordinance, and HSBC says it meets the financial crime controls that law requires. HSBC Digital Assets Custody provides safekeeping, and CoinDesk reports HSBC has said RedCoin will be fully backed by high-quality liquid assets held in separate accounts.

HSBC also ran a staff pilot with nearly 100 users before launch, testing the full journey from minting and wallet activation to live transfers.

How It Fits Hong Kong's Stablecoin Market

The HKMA granted Hong Kong's first stablecoin issuer licences in April 2026 to HSBC and Anchorpoint Financial, a Standard Chartered-led venture. CoinDesk notes Anchorpoint began a limited rollout of its HKDAP token in August, focused on institutional payments and settlement, which we covered in our look at HKDAP, Hong Kong's dollar stablecoin. RedCoin approaches the market from the retail side, so the two launches complement each other.

What Comes Next for RedCoin?

HSBC has a busy roadmap. Later in 2026 it plans to add stablecoin wallets to the HSBC HK Mobile Banking App and let customers subscribe to tokenized investment products with RedCoin, starting with a new share class of its long-running HKD money market fund. John O'Neill, HSBC's Managing Director for Digital Assets and Currencies, said the bank will also expand into wholesale corporate and institutional use cases.

RedCoin builds on a broad digital asset track record. HSBC already runs HSBC Orion for institutional digital bonds, HSBC Gold Token for retail customers and its Tokenised Deposit Service for wholesale payments, and it has taken part in HKMA initiatives such as the e-HKD+ Pilot Programme and Project Ensemble.
