Google's Android team opened the AICore Developer Preview to the broader developer community this week, and the centerpiece is Gemma 4 — a capable multimodal model running natively on-device without cloud connectivity, in over 140 languages. For developers building AI-powered Android applications, this represents a foundational shift in what on-device AI looks like on mobile hardware.
What Android AICore Actually Provides
Android AICore is Google's system-level infrastructure for hosting AI models directly on Android devices. Rather than every app shipping its own model and duplicating storage and memory footprint across the device, AICore centralizes model management at the operating system layer. Applications access the model through a standardized API, and the model runs once on the device regardless of how many applications leverage it simultaneously.
Gemma 4 running through AICore enables developers to build:
