AI runs on electricity, and Google just locked in a big new supply of it. On October 6, 2026, Google and Constellation Energy announced a 20-year power purchase agreement that will add 890 MW of new nuclear capacity to the PJM grid. The Google Constellation nuclear deal does not build a new plant; instead, it pays for upgrades that squeeze more output from existing reactors, which is one of the fastest routes to new clean power.

  • Core deal: a 20-year agreement for 890 MW of incremental nuclear capacity from uprates at 11 Constellation reactor units in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
  • Extra supply: a separate 15-year agreement for another 2,700 MW of energy on the PJM grid.
  • Investment: more than $4.3 billion from Constellation, with the first uprate expected in 2028.
  • Jobs: about 4,400 existing jobs sustained and roughly 7,200 construction jobs created.

What Is a Nuclear Uprate?

An uprate increases how much power an existing reactor can produce, typically by upgrading turbines, steam generators and digital controls. Because the reactor site, licenses and grid connections already exist, uprates can add capacity far faster than building from scratch. Constellation says the 890 MW is equivalent to several small modular reactors or one large conventional reactor. For a power-hungry industry, that is a meaningful amount of always-on, carbon-free electricity.

Why Does Google Need This Much Power?

AI data centers run around the clock, and training and serving large models takes enormous amounts of electricity. We have tracked how fast that infrastructure is growing, from record server spending to Google's custom chips, highlighted in the Marvell TPU deal. Long-term contracts like this one give Google predictable clean power and give Constellation the certainty to invest.

What Is the AI for Energy Alliance?

The agreement also includes a five-year technology alliance. Constellation will use Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise for an "AI for energy" effort focused on three areas: speeding up site selection, permitting and grid interconnection; optimizing generation through asset monitoring and outage management; and protecting critical operational technology networks. Google's Amanda Peterson Corio said the partnership aims to strengthen the PJM grid, which serves 67 million people, according to Investing.com.

What Does This Mean for Investors?

Constellation shares rose sharply in premarket trading after the announcement, according to Investing.com. For investors, the bigger signal is structural: hyperscalers are signing multi-decade contracts for firm clean power, which turns AI demand into long-lived revenue for power producers. That theme is worth watching in the stock trading section, but as always, this is not investment advice.
