
Debian Adopts Responsible Generative AI Contribution Rules
Debian's 1,045 eligible voters settled an eight-option ballot on AI-assisted contributions. Option E won: use the tools, own the output, same standards.
Eight Options, One Answer
Debian closed voting on August 28, 2026 on a General Resolution that had been sitting under the project's skin for a year: what should one of the oldest and most conservative Linux distributions do about contributors using large language models?
The ballot ran to eight options, spanning an outright ban written into the Social Contract at one end and unrestricted use at the other, with a proposal grounded in climate concerns somewhere in the middle. Option E — "Responsible Use of Generative AI" — won under Debian's Condorcet method, defeating every other option in pairwise comparison.

What the Resolution Actually Requires
The wording is short and the burden is clear. A contributor who uses an AI tool remains fully accountable for what they submit. They are expected to understand it, review it, test it, and change it where it needs changing. Blindly accepting or uploading generated material without human review is explicitly discouraged.
Disclosure of AI assistance is encouraged but not mandatory. And every submission — however it was produced — has to meet the same quality standards that already applied.
That last clause is the whole resolution in one line. Debian did not create a new category of contribution to be treated with suspicion. It restated the standard and made clear the standard does not move.
Why Did Debian Need a Vote at All?
Because the alternative was drift. Maintainers were already making individual calls, and a project of Debian's size runs on shared expectations rather than case-by-case negotiation. Options A, C, G and H each proposed some form of restriction or prohibition; the fact that all eight cleared quorum tells you the question had genuine weight across the developer body rather than being a fringe concern.
The choice of a non-prohibitive answer is also pragmatic. A ban would have been close to unenforceable — nothing in a patch reveals which editor produced it — and unenforceable rules erode the credibility of enforceable ones. An accountability rule, by contrast, maps onto something Debian already inspects: whether the code works and whether the person who submitted it can explain it.
What This Means for Other Open Source Projects
Debian tends to be a reference implementation for governance as much as for packaging. Projects wrestling with the same question now have a durable, community-ratified template that avoids both of the easy failure modes — pretending the tools do not exist, and waving everything through.
It is worth noting what the resolution does not do. It does not settle licensing questions around model training data, and it does not commit Debian to any position on the environmental cost that Option H raised. Those remain live. What it settles is the narrow, immediate question a maintainer faces at review time.
