Night City Opens Its Doors

Cyberpunk 2077 became available on Xbox Game Pass on March 10, giving Ultimate and Premium subscribers instant access to one of the most ambitious open-world RPGs ever made — and arguably the greatest comeback story in modern gaming. The game is available for both Cloud and Console play, meaning subscribers can dive into Night City from their Xbox or stream it to virtually any device.

The timing is deliberate. CD PROJEKT RED has been building momentum toward The Witcher 4 (which just got its RTX Mega Geometry showcase at GDC), and putting Cyberpunk 2077 in front of millions of Game Pass subscribers is a powerful way to remind the gaming world that the studio can deliver when it counts. The Cyberpunk 2077 that exists today — post-Phantom Liberty, post-2.0 update — is a fundamentally different game from the troubled 2020 launch.

The Transformation That Made It Possible

For anyone who hasn't touched Cyberpunk 2077 since its rocky debut, the list of improvements is staggering. Update 2.0 rebuilt the entire skill tree, overhauled police AI, redesigned vehicular combat, and rebalanced the economy. The Phantom Liberty expansion added an entirely new district, a spy thriller storyline featuring Idris Elba, and was received with near-universal critical acclaim.

The result is a game that currently sits at 86 on Metacritic (console version) with tens of thousands of positive user reviews on Steam. It's the rare case where a developer invested years of additional work to deliver on the original promise — and the player community rewarded that commitment.

What This Means for Game Pass

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the biggest individual additions to Game Pass in months. Open-world RPGs tend to generate enormous engagement hours per subscriber — players don't just try them for an hour and move on. Night City's branching storylines, faction systems, and exploration-driven gameplay are designed to keep players invested for 60-100+ hours.

For CD PROJEKT RED, the Game Pass deal provides a massive influx of new players who can now experience the game risk-free. Many of those players will become fans of the studio heading into The Witcher 4's marketing cycle — making this as much a strategic brand investment as a distribution deal.
