CME Group reported record trading activity on October 2, 2026. Average daily volume reached 31.8 million contracts in September, up 22% from a year earlier, and 29.4 million contracts in the third quarter, up 16%. Both figures exceeded the prior records set in 2024, according to the company's release. For investors, the story is that more people are using futures to manage risk across rates, stocks, energy and crops.

  • September: 31.8 million contracts per day, up 22% year over year.
  • Q3: 29.4 million contracts per day, up 16%.
  • Leaders: U.S. Treasury futures and options at 9.5 million, up 42%, and Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 at 2.4 million, up 73%.
  • International: 9.7 million contracts per day, up 25%.

What Drove CME's Record September?

Interest rate products led. Interest rate average daily volume was 16.2 million contracts, up 22%, and Treasury futures and options hit a record 9.5 million, up 42%. Two-year Treasury note futures averaged 1.3 million, up 67%. Equity index volume was 8.1 million, up 16%, energy was 3.1 million, up 37%, and agricultural products reached 1.9 million, up 29%. Foreign exchange averaged 1.4 million, up 32%, while metals were flat at about 1.0 million.

Why Are Micro Futures Growing So Fast?

Micro contracts are smaller, so they let individual traders and smaller firms take part with less capital. Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 futures averaged 2.4 million contracts, up 73%, and Micro WTI crude oil futures jumped 376% to 240,000 contracts. This fits the trend we noted when E-nano futures cut S&P 500 bets to $0.50 a point and when CME launched single stock futures.

How Are International Customers Using CME?

International average daily volume was 9.7 million contracts, up 25%, with EMEA at 7 million, up 22%, and APAC at 2.3 million, up 33%. That points to demand for U.S. benchmarks from clients around the world.

What Does a Volume Record Mean?

High volume generally signals active hedging and healthy liquidity, which can help traders get fairer prices. It does not predict where markets are headed, and this is not investment advice. For more, see our stock trading coverage.
