
Claude Memory Now Carries Between Chat and Cowork Tasks
Anthropic unified Claude's memory across chat and Cowork, with topic-by-topic editing and sensitive categories excluded by default on Free, Pro and Max.
The most tedious tax of working with AI assistants has never been the reasoning. It is re-explaining yourself. Anthropic addressed a specific version of that on August 25, 2026 by merging the memory systems behind Claude's chat interface and Cowork, so context established in one place is available in the other rather than stranded behind a product boundary.
- Memory is now shared in both directions: what Claude learns in chat is available when Cowork runs cloud-based tasks, and what Cowork gathers flows back into chat

Why a Shared Memory Layer Changes Agent Workflows
Cowork runs longer, more autonomous jobs than a chat turn, and until now it started each of those jobs without the accumulated context of the conversations that shaped the project. That produced a specific and irritating failure mode: you would spend a chat session establishing that a document should follow a house style, that a particular colleague prefers terse updates, or that a project has a fixed headcount, then hand the work to an agent that knew none of it.
Anthropic also changed when memories are written. Rather than summarising a conversation after it ends, Claude now updates memory continuously during the exchange, which is what makes handoff between the two surfaces feel immediate rather than delayed by a batch job. For anyone building repeatable workflows, the practical effect is fewer re-briefing turns per task, which matters more than it sounds when the same brief is repeated daily.
What Controls Do Users Actually Get?
More than the default in this category. Memory is inspectable topic by topic, not as an opaque profile, and every entry can be edited or removed. That granularity is the difference between a memory feature you can audit and one you have to trust.
The sensitive-topic handling is the more interesting design decision. Claude does not store health concerns, religious beliefs, political views, race, ethnicity or gender identity unless the user explicitly turns that on, and it notifies the user when such a topic is saved. A hard exclusion list also applies regardless of settings, covering government identifiers, social security numbers and criminal history. Defaulting to exclusion and requiring an affirmative opt-in is the conservative choice, and it is the right one for a system that persists across months of conversation.
How This Fits the Broader Agent Memory Problem
Memory has quietly become one of the harder open problems in applied AI, and not because storage is difficult. The difficulty is retrieval discipline: knowing which of a thousand remembered facts is relevant to the current request, and being willing to forget the rest. Research this month on tuning agent memory for accuracy gains found meaningful benchmark improvements from calibration alone, without any change to the underlying model.
Anthropic's approach here is the product-side counterpart to that research: make the memory legible and editable so the user can correct retrieval failures directly.
