Booking a Table Without Leaving the Conversation

On August 10, 2026, OpenAI and Yelp confirmed that ChatGPT users can now find and book restaurant reservations directly inside a conversation. The feature spans three booking platforms — OpenTable, Resy, and Yelp — and covers thousands of restaurants, including Yelp's waitlist system for venues that do not take advance bookings.

  • Three reservation platforms integrated: OpenTable, Resy, and Yelp
  • Coverage: OpenTable globally, Resy in the US, Yelp reservations and waitlists in the US and Canada
  • Rolling out across all ChatGPT plans on mobile, web, and desktop
  • Waitlist joins supported, not just advance reservations

What makes this worth noting is not the convenience. It is the shape of the interaction, which is a reasonably clean example of what people mean when they say agentic commerce.

How Does Booking a Table in ChatGPT Work?

You describe what you want the way you would describe it to a friend — neighborhood, night, party size, and any constraints like budget, cuisine, dietary needs, or the general vibe you are after. ChatGPT returns available times inline in the response rather than sending you to a booking site.

From there the interaction stays conversational. You can narrow the list with follow-up questions, ask about one specific restaurant, or adjust the party size and see the times update. When a slot works, you select it and the booking completes through the underlying platform.

That last detail is the important one. The reservation is still made by OpenTable, Resy, or Yelp, using their inventory and their confirmation flow. ChatGPT is acting as the interface layer, not as a competing booking system. Restaurants keep their existing guest-management tooling and their existing relationship with the diner.

Why Agentic Commerce Keeps Landing in Chat

The pattern here is the same one showing up across the AI tooling space: models are getting good enough at multi-turn clarification that the search-filter-compare loop collapses into a single conversation. Choosing a restaurant is a genuinely awkward task for a traditional interface — the constraints are fuzzy, they interact with each other, and half of them only surface once you see the options.

That is exactly the shape of problem conversational interfaces handle well. It also explains why payment and identity infrastructure for AI agents has been moving so quickly in parallel; we covered Cloudflare's spending-limit wallets for AI agents earlier this month, and reservation booking is the low-risk end of the same trajectory. Nothing is charged, nothing irreversible happens, and the worst outcome is a table you have to cancel.

What This Means for Diners and Restaurants

For diners, the practical gain is fewer tabs. For restaurants, the gain is distribution — appearing in an AI-mediated recommendation without having to build anything new, because the integration sits at the reservation-platform layer rather than requiring per-restaurant work.

It also arrives in a week where OpenAI has been steadily expanding what ChatGPT can do on a user's behalf, following the reasoning effort controls that shipped for GPT-5.6 Sol. The direction is consistent: give the model more real-world reach, and give the user more visible control over how it uses it. You can follow more of these developments in our AI coverage.
