Tokenized Treasury Repo: What BNY and Citadel Just Proved

BNY and Citadel Securities settled a tokenized US Treasury in minutes, not T+1, then used it as repo collateral. Here's what it means for 24/7 markets.

Tokenized Treasury repo just moved from whiteboard to working trade. On October 13, BNY announced that it completed a triparty repo workflow with Citadel Securities using a tokenized representation of a US Treasury note, which BNY describes as the first use of tokenized assets on a major triparty repo platform. The headline benefit: the tokenized note settled within minutes instead of the standard next-business-day cycle, and was then immediately put to work as collateral.

  • The trade: Citadel Securities bought a 2-year US Treasury note through BNY on Tradeweb.
  • Settlement: a tokenized version of the note, recorded on BNY's private digital ledger, settled within minutes rather than T+1.
  • Financing: Citadel then pledged the tokenized Treasury as collateral in an overnight triparty repo, with BNY providing cash.
  • Scale: BNY has $62.6 trillion in assets under custody and/or administration as of June 30, 2026.

What Is a Triparty Repo?

A repo, short for repurchase agreement, is a short-term loan backed by collateral, usually government bonds. In a triparty repo, a bank like BNY sits in the middle, managing the collateral between the borrower and the lender. It is one of the core plumbing systems of Wall Street: firms use Treasuries they own to raise cash overnight, every day.

The friction, as CoinDesk explains, is that moving Treasuries between accounts and settlement systems can tie assets up. If a bond takes a day to settle, it cannot be pledged for financing until that cycle completes.

Why Does Settling in Minutes Matter?

Settlement speed turns idle collateral into usable collateral. In this trade, the Treasury went from purchase to settlement to financing in one continuous flow. Citadel Securities' Dan Doherty said that tokenized Treasuries can move from settlement into financing more efficiently, reducing friction across the trade lifecycle.

For a large trading firm, recycling collateral faster means less capital sitting idle while trades settle. Multiply that across a market where Treasuries underpin trillions of dollars of daily financing, and even small time savings become meaningful.

It is also worth noting what this trade was not. It ran on BNY's private, permissioned ledger, not a public blockchain, and BNY did not disclose the trade size. This is tokenization as an upgrade to existing market structure rather than a replacement for it, the same approach we saw when IBM and Swift tested tokenized deposits.

What Comes Next for BNY's Tokenization Plans?

BNY laid out three next steps in its announcement:

  • Digital cash: adding digital cash and tokenized deposit capabilities for on-chain settlement and financing.
  • Longer hours: extending operating hours for its traditional settlement platforms for Fed-eligible securities and US triparty transactions.
  • Global sessions: stretching those hours into European and Asian trading time next year.

Put together, that points toward the long-promised "always-on" market, where collateral can move when it is needed rather than when the settlement window opens. BNY already has hands-on experience with digital assets, including custody for USDC stablecoin reserves.

The Takeaway

Tokenized Treasuries have mostly been discussed as investment products. This trade shows a more practical use: making the collateral that already powers financial markets move faster. Watch for whether more dealers join and whether BNY's extended hours arrive on schedule in 2027. As always, this is market analysis, not investment advice. More in our crypto coverage.
