Android Scam Protection: What Google Messages' New Mode Does
Android scam protection gets an upgrade: Gemini checks unknown texts, risky links get warnings, and bank-call verification has blocked 3M+ spoofed calls.
Android scam protection is getting one of its biggest upgrades yet. On October 14, Google announced a new opt-in Enhanced protection mode for Google Messages, smarter link checks powered by Gemini Nano, privacy shields for screen sharing, and new defenses against a sneaky call-forwarding trick. For anyone who has ever received a "your package is delayed" text, this is very good news.
- Enhanced protection mode: an opt-in Google Messages setting rolling out "in the coming weeks" that bundles Gemini-based scam detection, link checks and link warnings.
- Scale today: Google says its scam detection in Phone and Messages already flags more than 5 million suspected scam calls and texts every month.
- Bank call verification: Google reports more than 3 million spoofed calls blocked since June for Banco do Brasil and Itaú Unibanco alone, with Revolut also supported.
- Screen-share privacy: login and payment fields are blanked automatically during screen sharing on Android 15 and later, now extending to Chrome and Android WebView.
What Is Enhanced Protection Mode in Google Messages?
Enhanced protection mode is a single switch that turns on three layers of defense. BleepingComputer notes it is off by default, so you will want to enable it yourself once it arrives.
- Scam Detection with Private AI Compute: conversations from unknown senders are analyzed by Gemini in Google's Private AI Compute environment. Google lists support for Pixel 6 and later, the Galaxy S24 series and later, the Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold6 and later, and other AICore devices.
- Smarter link safety checks: on-device Gemini Nano examines unfamiliar links using real-time web signals. This needs a Pixel 10 or later, the Galaxy S26 series, the Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold8, or other select devices.
- Link checkpoints: a warning screen before you open a link from an unfamiliar sender, now available on Android 6 and later rather than only in select countries.
How Does Android Stop Fake Bank Calls?
Impersonating a bank is one of the oldest scams around, and Google's verified financial calls feature tackles it directly. When a call claims to come from a participating bank, Android checks with the bank's own app whether the bank's call center actually placed it. If it did not, the call ends automatically. The feature launched in Brazil in June, and Google says more banks are on the way.
What Is Call-Forwarding Protection?
Scammers sometimes trick people into forwarding their calls so they can intercept verification codes. Starting in early December on Pixel and other select devices, Android will block apps from silently turning on call forwarding in the background and will warn you before a manually typed forwarding code takes effect. It is a small, precise fix that closes a real gap.
Scam Alerts Expand Beyond Pixel
On-device scam alerts in chat notifications, which started on Pixel, are expanding to devices from HONOR, Infinix, iQOO, itel, JOVI, Motorola, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, TECNO, vivo and Xiaomi later this year. Google says that will bring the protection to hundreds of millions more people, although availability varies by manufacturer.
What Should Android Users Do Now?
The best move is simple: keep Google Messages updated and switch on Enhanced protection mode when it appears in your settings. These features build on the anti-spyware defenses in Android 17 Advanced Protection, and together they show how on-device AI can quietly make phones safer for everyone, especially relatives who are most likely to be targeted. Pair it with a passkey on your email account and you have closed two of the biggest doors scammers rely on. More defensive security news lives in our AI security section.
