Upscaling is coming to Xbox in a big way. AMD announced on October 20, 2026, in cooperation with Xbox, that FSR 4.1, its machine-learning upscaler, is coming first to the ROG Xbox Ally handheld and soon to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Even better, AMD confirmed that Project Helix, the next-generation Xbox, will use a future version called FSR Diamond. If you have been eyeing PlayStation's fancy new upscalers with envy, Xbox players finally have their own answer.

  • First up: ROG Xbox Ally handheld, with Xbox Series X and S support "coming soon" (no date yet)
  • Next gen: Project Helix will use AMD FSR "Diamond"
  • On PC: FSR 4.1 already runs on Radeon RX 6000, RX 7000 and RX 9000 series graphics, according to AMD
  • Supported games: none named yet; developers choose whether to implement it

What Is AMD FSR 4.1 Upscaling?

FSR, short for FidelityFX Super Resolution, lets a game render at a lower resolution and then rebuild the image at a higher one. Version 4 moved to machine learning, putting it in the same family as Nvidia's DLSS. As VGC explains, the payoff is that developers can render below 4K and upscale to something very close to native, freeing up performance that can help a game hit 60fps or even 120fps. It is the classic having-your-cake-and-eating-it trick, except the cake is frame rate.

AMD says FSR 4.1 grew out of its Project Amethyst partnership with Sony, the same research that produced PlayStation's PSSR on PS5 Pro and the newer QSSR upscaler on standard PS5. If you want a refresher on how all these acronyms compare, our DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS upscaling guide breaks it down.

When Is FSR 4.1 Coming to Xbox Series X and S?

The ROG Xbox Ally gets it first. For the consoles, Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet said in AMD's video that support is "coming soon to Xbox Series S and X," without giving a date. He also said Xbox worked very closely with AMD to optimize the technology, describing it as another powerful tool for developers.

One important caveat: upscaling is opt-in at the game level. Your existing library will not magically look sharper overnight. Studios need to add FSR 4.1 to their games, so the real benefit arrives as updates and new releases adopt it.

What Is FSR Diamond for Project Helix?

AMD has not shared technical details of FSR Diamond yet, only that Project Helix will lean on it to "push next-generation gaming even further." Van Vliet called today's news "just the beginning" and pointed to more joint hardware and software work ahead. We already know Helix is shaping up as a whole family of Xbox devices, so a shared upscaling toolkit across handhelds, consoles and PCs makes a lot of sense.

Why Xbox Players Should Be Excited

Both Gematsu and VGC frame this as levelling the playing field: with FSR 4.1, Xbox Series X and S and PS5 will all support modern machine-learning upscaling when developers choose to use it. For the Series S in particular, which has the least horsepower of the current consoles, smarter upscaling could be a real quality-of-life boost. Keep an eye on our gaming news for the first games to list FSR 4.1 support.
