AMD Tops $1 Trillion: What's Behind the Chip Stock's Run
AMD topped a $1 trillion market cap on September 21 as shares hit a record $613.92, making it the fourth US chipmaker to join the club on AI demand.
AMD Joins the Trillion-Dollar Club
Advanced Micro Devices crossed a $1 trillion market capitalization for the first time on Monday, September 21. Shares rose about 9% to a record $613.92 during the session, according to TIPInsights, extending a five-day winning streak, and AMD became the fourth US chipmaker to reach the milestone, according to Semafor. The Nasdaq notched its first record close since June on the same day.
- Milestone: a market value above $1 trillion, briefly during Monday's session per The Register
- The run: a record intraday price of $613.92 at the end of a five-session winning streak
- Peer check: Nvidia sits near $5.5 trillion and Intel near $640 billion, according to The Register
- Driver: AI data center demand, including MI450 GPU deployments at Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, Anthropic and Meta
Why Did AMD Stock Jump This Week?
Monday's move rode a broad AI and semiconductor rally. Semafor points to strong global demand for AI chips, record chip-driven exports from South Korea, and an 11% surge in Meta shares after its AI assistant climbed to the top of the app store. When one of AMD's biggest GPU customers signals its AI products are landing with consumers, investors connect the dots back to the chips.
The bigger story is the steady build-up behind the rally. Data center revenue doubled in the second quarter, as we covered in AMD's Q2 2026 results, and The Register reports that GPU revenue now roughly matches Epyc CPU revenue.
Where Is AMD Gaining Ground?
According to The Register, AMD's share of desktop CPUs reached 35% in August, with 34.5% of data center CPUs overall and 46.4% when counting only Epyc against Xeon SP. On the AI side, the MI450 has lined up an impressive customer list, including Anthropic's agreement to deploy up to 2 gigawatts, which followed AMD's up-to-$5B commitment to Anthropic's compute push in July.
Looking ahead, CEO Lisa Su expects data center segment revenue to more than double year over year in 2027 as Helios rack systems and MI450 deployments scale up. AMD claims its Helios racks carry 50% more HBM4 memory than competing systems, a vendor figure worth watching as independent benchmarks arrive.
What Should Investors Watch Next?
- Holding the level: The Register describes the $1 trillion mark as an intraday high, so watch whether AMD can close and stay above it
- MI450 ramp: shipment timing for Helios racks will drive the 2027 story
- Market share: further CPU gains in servers and desktops support margins while GPUs scale
- Valuation: after a run this strong, expectations are high, which can mean sharper swings on any news
For a company long cast as the underdog, joining Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron above a trillion dollars, as TIPInsights lists them, is quite a moment. As always, this is market news, not a recommendation. More in our stock trading coverage.
