Agent Skills Joins AAIF: What Open Agent Standards Mean

Agent Skills, used by 70+ agent platforms, moves to the Agentic AI Foundation with Open Responses, OpenSandbox and OpenEnv, bringing AAIF to 10 projects.

AI agents got a little more interoperable this week. On October 22, 2026, Anthropic announced it is donating Agent Skills, the open standard for packaging know-how that agents can load on demand, to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation. It is one of four projects joining the foundation at once, alongside contributions from OpenAI, Alibaba and Hugging Face. For developers building agents across multiple tools, a shared, vendor-neutral home for these building blocks is good news.

  • Agent Skills adoption: more than 70 agent platforms, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code, according to Anthropic
  • Scale: Anthropic says about 1 million skills have been published and nearly 280 million installed
  • Four new projects: Agent Skills (Anthropic), Open Responses (OpenAI), OpenSandbox (Alibaba) and OpenEnv (Hugging Face), bringing AAIF to 10 projects
  • Membership: AAIF has passed 300 members, with 60 joining this quarter, per The Register

What Is the Agentic AI Foundation?

The AAIF launched in December 2025 under the Linux Foundation as a neutral home for agent infrastructure. Its first three projects were the Model Context Protocol (MCP), goose and AGENTS.md. Anthropic co-founded the foundation with Block and OpenAI and previously donated MCP to it, so this week's move follows a familiar path: a vendor creates a useful standard, it spreads quickly, and then it moves to shared governance so no single company controls it.

What Are Agent Skills?

A skill is simply a folder containing a SKILL.md file that teaches an agent a specific task or domain, plus any scripts or reference material it needs. Anthropic says it developed skills while working on Claude Code, which handled general knowledge work well but often lacked the procedural knowledge real business tasks require. Within weeks of launch, developers had published thousands of skills on GitHub and built loaders for other agents, and Anthropic published the format as an open standard in December 2025.

As part of the donation, Anthropic is handing over the Agent Skills name and logo, the GitHub organization and the agentskills.io domain. Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and other companies will maintain the standard as individuals, with David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag as lead maintainers. Developers can keep using or contributing to the standard without joining the AAIF.

What Do the Other Three Projects Do?

The Register summarizes the newcomers this way:

  • Open Responses from OpenAI is an open API specification that standardizes request and response formats, streaming events and tool invocation patterns across model providers
  • OpenSandbox from Alibaba provides ways to constrain or sandbox what an agent can do, using SDKs, lifecycle hooks and container runtimes
  • OpenEnv from Hugging Face offers a containerized service for building reinforcement learning environments that interoperate and scale

Put together with MCP and AGENTS.md, the foundation now covers a large share of the plumbing a modern agent needs: how it talks to models, how it reaches tools, what instructions it reads, what skills it loads and where it runs safely.

Why Vendor-Neutral Agent Standards Matter

Shared standards lower the cost of switching tools and make agent behavior more predictable. A skill written once can work in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Copilot, and a tool exposed over MCP can serve any compatible agent. Anthropic says the proposed roadmap starts with versioned releases, a formal proposal process and security guidance for people who write and install skills, an especially welcome item given how quickly skills are being shared.

Membership growth suggests the industry agrees. The Register lists Ant Group, the Gates Foundation, MongoDB, Nutanix, Royal Bank of Canada, Vercel and Vultr among this quarter's Gold Members.
