Ace Combat 8 is finding room for its pilots outside the cockpit. A September 25 PlayStation Blog preview explores how Wings of Theve uses interactive first-person scenes to make the squadron feel closer. The idea is appealing: the person sharing your next flight should feel like someone you have actually spent time with.

  • The preview describes mostly first-person story scenes.
  • Players can look around and make simple physical responses.
  • PS5 scenes use DualSense haptic feedback.
  • Bandai Namco lists an October 2 launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

How do Ace Combat 8's first-person scenes work?

In the PlayStation preview, Phil Hornshaw describes a silent protagonist who can still participate in a scene. The right stick adjusts the view, directional inputs can indicate yes or no, and contextual button prompts let the player interact. Conversation and radio exchanges help introduce the other members of Joker Flight.

That gives downtime a small but useful layer of participation. Our take is that being able to glance toward a speaker or acknowledge a remark can make a scene feel less distant, even when the story follows a prescribed route. It is a promising approach to connecting the person on deck with the pilot in the air.

Is the flying still the main attraction?

Bandai Namco's official description keeps fast arcade aerial action at the center of the campaign, with layered clouds and missions built around combat flying. The publisher also emphasizes the relationships between squad members during the quieter stretches. Those are descriptions of the intended experience, not a verdict on the finished game's pacing.

The release listing includes single-player and multiplayer modes. Its October 2 date is the standard launch date; individual edition bonuses should be checked separately rather than assumed to apply to everyone.

What will make the character moments land?

For us, the test is whether the conversations give later flights more personality without making repeat play feel slow. A recognizable voice on the radio can do a lot of storytelling work when your attention is already on the sky.

Players interested in the physical side of that experience can also explore our controller stick guide. We will be watching how the complete campaign balances its quieter scenes with the flying that makes this corner of gaming so distinctive. For now, this is a preview of the design, not a scored review.
