3M Q3 2026 Earnings: EPS Beat and an Amazon Data Center Deal
3M Q3 2026 earnings: adjusted EPS up 12% to $2.50, guidance raised to $9.10-$9.15 and an Amazon warrant tied to $6B in optical data center sales.
3M kicked off its earnings day with a clean beat and a headline that has nothing to do with sticky notes. The industrial giant reported third-quarter 2026 results on October 20, raised its full-year profit outlook and spotlighted an expanded deal with Amazon to scale its optical connectivity products for data centers. For investors who still file 3M under "old industrial," this quarter is a reminder of how much of its growth now runs through AI infrastructure.
- Adjusted EPS: $2.50, up 12% year over year; GAAP EPS $2.63, up 70%
- Sales: $6.6 billion, with adjusted organic growth of 3.3%
- Margins and cash: adjusted operating margin 26.2%, up 110 basis points; adjusted free cash flow $1.2 billion
- Guidance: 2026 adjusted EPS raised to $9.10 to $9.15
What Did 3M Report for Q3 2026?
According to 3M's earnings release, GAAP sales rose 1.0% to $6.6 billion, while adjusted sales, which exclude manufactured PFAS products, grew 4.2% with organic growth of 3.3%. GAAP operating margin improved 150 basis points to 23.7%. CEO William Brown credited "solid sales growth, continued margin expansion, double-digit EPS growth, and robust free cash flow," and said productivity from the company's structural transformation and a stronger pipeline of new technologies give it confidence in the full-year outlook. 3M returned $0.6 billion to shareholders through dividends and buybacks in the quarter.
One housekeeping note: 3M now treats amortization of acquired intangibles as a special item in its adjusted numbers. The company says that lifts adjusted margin by about 40 basis points and adjusted EPS by about $0.04 per quarter, but all periods are restated on the same basis, so the year-over-year comparisons hold up. If adjusted versus GAAP figures still feel slippery, our guide on how to read an earnings report walks through it.
How Does the 3M and Amazon Deal Work?
This is the story that will get the most attention. 3M entered an expanded strategic commercial relationship with Amazon to deploy and scale 3M's optical connectivity and other data center products. 3M issued Amazon a warrant to buy up to 3.2 million 3M shares, which vests based on reaching $6 billion in cumulative sales of those products over the next seven years, plus other milestones. BigGo Finance's call summary puts the warrant at roughly 0.6% of 3M's shares and quotes Brown saying the deal "validates the technology."
The structure should look familiar. Chip suppliers have used the same warrant-for-orders approach with hyperscalers, as in the Qualcomm and Amazon warrant deal. 3M is also investing to acquire about 4.7% of Taiwan's Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO) to scale manufacturing of its Expanded Beam Optics technology, which carries data between servers using light instead of copper.
Where Is 3M's Growth Coming From?
Per BigGo Finance's summary of the earnings call, the Safety and Industrial segment led with 7% organic growth, with the Electrical Markets division growing double digits as data center customers expand. Semiconductor and data center demand also grew double digits, management said orders were up high single digits, and backlog was up high teens heading into the fourth quarter. Regionally, the US and Canada grew about 7%.
What It Means for Investors
A raised outlook, rising backlog and a seven-year runway with one of the world's largest cloud buyers give 3M a clearer AI-era growth story than it has had in years. As always, this is not investment advice, but it is a quarter worth understanding if you follow industrials or the data center supply chain.
